Ashawnty Davis, a beautiful little 10 year old girl, hanged herself in her closet when a video of her confronting a suspected bully was uploaded to an app called Musical.ly. After two weeks on life support passed away at Children’s Hospital Colorado Wednesday, Nov. 29.
“She was just a child of joy and she brought joy to everyone,” her father Anthony Davis told FOX31 Denver.
Davis was a fifth-grade student at Sunrise Elementary School. She loved basketball and wanted to become a WNBA player when she grew up. Her parents told FOX31 Denver that they noticed a changed in Ashawnty around the end of October after she was involved in a fight after school. Her father said it was her first fight ever, and the encounter was recorded by another student.
The video shows Ashawnty and another young girl fighting while a group of kids watched. Ashawnty’s mother, Latoshia Harris, said her daughter confronted the girl who she claims had been bullying her.
“I saw my daughter was scared,” Harris said.
Anthony Davis said his daughter was devastated when she found out the video of the fight was sent to Musical.ly. The couple said the bullying Ashawnty endured after the video went live was too much for the 10-year-old to handle.
“My daughter came home two weeks later and hanged herself in the closet,” Harris said.
“It’s just devastating,” her father said.
The couple believes Ashawnty was a victim of “bullycide” – a term used for when someone takes his/her life after experiencing bullying. They said they want other parents to be aware of this issue and do something to stop it. They hope their own daughter’s story will encourage people to take action.
“We have to stop it and we have to stop it within our kids,” Davis said.
